Breaking: Islamabad High Court’s Landmark Decision Pending on PTI’s Right to Protest
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has reserved its verdict regarding a petition filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) seeking authorization for a protest in Islamabad. The petition, submitted by PTI leader Amir Mughal, came after the city administration denied permission for the event scheduled for July 26.
Justice Saman Rifat presided over the hearing. The state counsel informed the court that all political parties, including the PTI, had their requests for protest rallies declined due to prevailing security concerns in the federal capital, according to Geo News.
Advocate General Islamabad Ayaz Shaukat underscored that Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) had announced a sit-in at D-Chowk, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) called for a protest rally, and PTI sought permission for a demonstration at the Press Club. “However, no party received permission; Islamabad has been effectively shut down,” he stated.
Petitioner’s counsel, Advocate Shoaib Shaheen, urged the court to allow PTI’s protest at F-9 Park. According to media reports, Shaheen argued that the administration had been directed by the IHC to permit PTI’s rally on a previous occasion, but the Advocate General had noted the difficulty of issuing permits if JI’s sit-in prolonged.
The outcome now hangs on the IHC’s reserved decision, which will determine the feasibility of PTI’s planned protest amid a generally restricted protest environment in Islamabad.
