Urgent Plea: AIUDF Chief Ajmal Demands Rs 1 Lakh Crore for Assam Flood Relief, Rs 5,000 Crore Lifeline for Minorities

Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, chief of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), has submitted a memorandum to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, requesting Rs 1 lakh crore to address Assam’s perennial flood issues and an additional Rs 5,000 crore for the upliftment of minorities in India.

Ajmal underscored that floods have been devastating Assam for the past seventy-five years, with 29 districts affected this year alone, resulting in severe loss of life and property. He emphasized that despite previous promises, substantial financial support has not been provided to mitigate these recurring disasters.

“In her budget speech, Union Minister Sitharaman announced funds for tackling Assam’s flood and erosion problem. I’ve written to highlight that for seventy-five years, annual floods have caused significant losses in Assam. This year alone, 29 districts were hit, with over a hundred lives lost and countless properties damaged. I urge the Finance Minister to grant Rs 1 lakh crore to address this issue. The people of Assam will be forever grateful,” Ajmal stated.

Additionally, Ajmal called for an increase in financial allocations for minorities, pointing out that the current Rs 3,100 crore is insufficient. He proposed raising the amount to Rs 5,000 crore to support programs such as ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ and to provide laptops and educational resources to minority children.

Earlier, Ajmal had criticized the Assam government for its inadequate response to the flood crisis in Dhubri, highlighting that 90% of affected areas have received no relief materials. He accused the state government of neglect and inaction over the 15-20 day ongoing flood situation.

As the flood crisis worsens, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that the death toll has now surpassed 90, affecting over 5 lakh people across 18 districts, with Cachar district being the most severely impacted.
