Manipur Youth Fight for Future: Powerful 2-Day Sit-In Protest for ‘Disturbance-Free Education Zone’

A two-day sit-in protest demanding a “Disturbance-Free Education Zone” began today, drawing teachers and students from both government and private institutions to various schools and colleges. The Coordinating Committee on Disturbance-Free Educational Zone Demand is leading the campaign, which saw demonstrations at notable educational establishments such as TG Higher Secondary School, Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Millennium Institute of Sciences, and Imphal College, among others.

Speaking to the media, committee member N. Thoithoiba pointed to the substantial adverse effects of ongoing disturbances on education. He highlighted how frequent monetary demands from various organizations place excessive pressure on educators, indirectly affecting students. Thoithoiba also criticized the state government’s inadequate teacher transfer policy, which fosters nepotism, favoritism, and corruption within educational institutions.

TG Higher Secondary School student Priyanka Kongkham underscored the pivotal role of students in societal development. She called for authorities to focus on creating an educational environment free from disruptions. Kongkham urged the government to enforce legislation ensuring a minimum of 220 instructional days per year, safeguard education from unexpected program interruptions, and prevent the politicization and corruption of the educational sector.

The demonstrators’ demands echo a broader appeal for systemic reforms aimed at protecting the integrity and quality of education in the region.
