Tezpur University to Launch Centre for Hindu Studies

GUWAHATI: Tezpur University (TU) in Assam is pioneering an academic venture with the inauguration of a Centre for Hindu Studies. This initiative, sanctioned by the university’s highest governing bodies—the Academic Council and Board of Management—aims to foster a profound understanding of Hindu philosophy, culture, and heritage.

With this new endeavor, TU will become the first higher educational institution in the northeast region of India to offer specialized programs in Hindu Studies. A statement released by the university on Tuesday confirmed the plans, elaborating on the scope of the initiative. Complementing the Centre for Hindu Studies, a Centre for Indian Knowledge System is also slated for establishment to encourage multidisciplinary research rooted in Indian traditions.

Tezpur University’s Vice-Chancellor, Shambhu Nath Singh, has formally reached out to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for necessary support and resources. In his letter to UGC Chairman Prof M Jagadesh Kumar, Singh highlighted the critical need for faculty and staff to ensure the successful operation of these centers. He expressed confidence that these academic ventures will significantly contribute to the national higher education landscape by offering value and skill-oriented courses.

Singh pointed out that many Indian institutions already offer programs on Islamic and Buddhist studies, and a similar focus on Hindu studies will provide advanced knowledge on Hindu traditions, history, contemporary affairs, and spirituality. A committee has been established to develop a detailed plan, including curriculum design for the proposed programs.

Once operational, the Centre for Hindu Studies at TU will enable interdisciplinary research and scholarly exploration of Hinduism and its diverse traditions, thus enriching the academic discourse on cultural and spiritual studies in India.
