Sikkim MP Advocates for Enhanced Speaking Time and Climate Change Discussions at All-Party Meeting
GANGTOK: Sikkim’s Lok Sabha MP, Indra Hang Subba, representing the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, participated in an all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at the Parliament Annex Building in New Delhi. During the session, Subba made a strong case for smaller parties, demanding that they be granted at least 10 minutes each to speak in Parliament to ensure their voices are heard. He also proposed comprehensive discussions on climate change and immediate action for mitigation programs, emphasizing the importance of attention-calling motions for smaller parties.
The meeting saw the attendance of key figures including Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda. Later in the day, Subba engaged in further dialogue with Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margarita. In this meeting, he submitted an application seeking support for reviving Sikkim’s traditional textiles and craftsmanship, highlighting the unique bamboo crafts of the Lepchas. He specifically mentioned Jorden Lepcha, a celebrated bamboo hat maker who was conferred the Padma Shri this year.
In his application, Subba underscored the importance of preserving Sikkim’s rich tradition of creating exceptional textiles, ornaments, and decorative items. He pointed out that these skills, passed down through generations, form an integral part of the region’s cultural identity. For these traditional crafts to thrive and continue benefiting the community, Subba called for substantial support and resources for their revival.
A press release from Subba’s office emphasized that the day’s discussions and meetings were pivotal in ensuring that Sikkim and its smaller parties are acknowledged in Parliament. By focusing on climate change, flood recovery, and the preservation of traditional crafts, Subba aims to secure a sustainable future for the community. He remains committed to advocating for the aspirations of the people of Sikkim, seeking the necessary support and cooperation from government representatives to achieve these goals.
