Controversy Erupts as Ban Lifted on Govt Employees Joining RSS; Congress Outraged, Warns of ‘Knickers Bureaucracy’
The Indian government’s decision to lift the ban on government employees participating in Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activities has ignited a political controversy involving the opposition and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP leader Amit Malviya announced on social media that the Modi government had revoked a 58-year-old ban, originally imposed in 1966. Malviya highlighted that the ban was a reaction to a massive anti-cow-slaughter protest organized by RSS-Jana Sangh, which resulted in fatalities due to police action.
Congress MP KC Venugopal criticized the move, terming it a “very unfortunate move” and accused the BJP-led government of ignoring public sentiment. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also expressed disapproval, arguing that participation in RSS activities contradicts India’s unity and integrity, as RSS members prioritize Hindutva over national loyalty.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh pointed out that the ban had even been upheld during former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure. He recalled that Sardar Patel had initially banned RSS in 1948 but lifted it on conditions of good behavior, which the RSS allegedly disregarded. Ramesh criticized the recent decision, suggesting that it would lead to a blending of bureaucracy with RSS ideologies.
The opposition claims that by lifting the ban, the government is undermining secular values and compromising the integrity of the civil service. As the debate intensifies, the implications of this decision on India’s political and social fabric remain to be seen.
