Historic Breakthrough: Charaideo Moidams Earn UNESCO World Heritage Status – A Monumental Day for Assam’s 700-Year-Old Burial Site
The 700-year-old Moidams, a mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, are being considered for nomination to the World Heritage List. This historic decision will be discussed during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC), set to convene from July 21 to 31 in New Delhi. If successful, the Moidams will become the first cultural site from India’s northeastern region to earn a place on the prestigious list.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the session, marking the first time India will host this international event. The gathering at Bharat Mandapam will see culture ministers, representatives, and stakeholders from across the globe come together to deliberate on the preservation of cultural, natural, and mixed heritage.
This nomination signifies not just national, but global recognition of the Ahom dynasty’s rich legacy. As the session unfolds, all eyes will be on the Moidams, with the potential to bring northeastern India into the global spotlight for its cultural and historical significance.
