In a distressing episode at Bangkok’s luxurious Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel, six individuals of Vietnamese origin, including two dual US nationals, were found dead on Tuesday due to cyanide poisoning. The Bangkok police disclosed on Wednesday that traces of cyanide were discovered in the victims’ bloodstreams, glasses, a water container, and coffee they had shared.
According to Noppasil Poonsawas, Deputy Commander of Investigations at Bangkok’s Metropolitan Police Bureau, one of the deceased was responsible for the poisonings, South China Morning Post reported.
The victims, comprising three men and three women, were all of Vietnamese origin. In response to the deaths of two US citizens, the US State Department expressed condolences and assured it was closely monitoring the situation. A spokesperson highlighted that local authorities bear the responsibility for determining the cause of death, and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined the probe, as per Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.
Bangkok police are currently searching for a seventh "missing guest" linked to the booking.
