Hope Rises as Assam Flood Situation Dramatically Improves
The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Wednesday as water levels across the state began to recede, according to officials. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has forecasted no rain for the next two days, raising hopes for quicker improvements. Despite this positive outlook, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported on Tuesday night that approximately 4 lakh people are still affected by the flooding, with one more death confirmed in Dhemaji.
The number of affected districts has decreased to 16, but major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, remain above danger levels at several points. Cachar is currently the worst-hit district, with 80,783 people affected, followed closely by Dhubri and Nagaon, with 80,544 and 76,889 people affected respectively.
Relief efforts are ongoing, with 84 relief camps housing 15,476 people and an additional 38 centers providing aid to another 15,607 individuals. Despite the receding waters, croplands spanning 19,724.05 hectares remain submerged. In the past 24 hours, six animals have been washed away, and 2,08,119 others are impacted.
The Brahmaputra River continues to flow above dangerous levels at Nimatighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri, while other rivers like Disang in Nanglamuraghat and Kushiyara in Karimganj are also above danger levels. Infrastructure, including embankments, roads, bridges, and houses, has sustained significant damage across various districts.
In a bit of positive news, traffic restrictions on the Kaziranga section of the national highway have been relaxed due to the improving situation, although speed limits remain enforced. The easing of these restrictions is a small but welcome relief as the state continues to cope with the aftermath of the severe flooding.
