Heart-Wrenching Ordeal: Ferry with Dozens Stranded in Majuli’s Treacherous Waters
Jorhat, Jul 17: In a distressing turn of events, a ferry transporting passengers became stranded in the middle of the Brahmaputra River near Majuli, Assam. The incident occurred just as the ferry resumed operations after a 17-day pause due to heightened water levels. Onboard were 12 cars, 40 motorcycles, and several passengers.
The ferry embarked on its journey Wednesday morning from Aphalamukh Ghat, heading towards Nimatighat. Midway through its transit on the mighty river, the ferry encountered difficulties that left it immobile and stranded.
Upon receiving the emergency alert, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) quickly mobilized a rescue team to the site, aiming to ensure the safety of all passengers and secure the stranded vehicles. Further updates on the situation are still pending.
This incident underscores the precariousness of riverine transport in Assam, particularly during the monsoon season when the Brahmaputra swells, posing significant challenges to navigation. The authorities’ swift response highlights ongoing efforts to manage such crises and ensure passenger safety.
Further information is yet to be released as rescue operations continue. The severity of this incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils faced by those reliant on ferry transport during Assam’s peak monsoon period.
