Guwahati: Prominent agricultural scientist Dr. Veena Vidyadharan has recently underscored the importance of riverine transport and waterways, spotlighting the recent bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and India concerning the Brahmaputra and Meghna River basins. Citing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on utilizing coastal protocol routes for riverine transit and trade as a significant milestone, Dr. Vidyadharan elaborated on the potential these waterways hold for enhancing trade and commerce.
In the inaugural Arun Roy Memorial Lecture, titled ‘Inland Water Transport: Challenges and Opportunities in the Context of the Brahmaputra,’ Dr. Vidyadharan provided a comprehensive overview of National Waterway 2 (the Brahmaputra) and NW-16 (the Barak). She informed attendees about the current dynamics of river-based trade between India and Bangladesh and addressed the challenges hindering the sustainability of these initiatives.
During her insightful lecture, Dr. Vidyadharan proposed several recommendations aimed at improving the Inland Water Transport (IWT) sector in Assam. She emphasized the need for strategic investments, policy reforms, and enhanced infrastructure to bolster IWT-centric trade and livelihoods in the region.
