Odisha CM Offers Assistance to Flood-Hit Assam; Casualties and Wildlife Impact Mount
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reached out to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday, offering aid to mitigate the devastating effects of the ongoing floods in Assam. CM Sarma took to social media late Monday night to express his gratitude, noting that Odisha’s capabilities in disaster management could significantly help Assam during this crisis. Both leaders agreed to stay in contact for potential assistance.
Earlier the same day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke with CM Sarma, reviewing the flood situation in Assam. Shah assured that the Central Government would support the National Disaster Response Force to combat the crisis.
Despite some developments, the flood situation remains dire. In the last 24 hours, three more lives were lost, including two minors. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported that these deaths occurred in Dhubri and Nagaon.
Kaziranga National Park has also been severely affected, with 196 animal deaths reported, including 10 rhinos. The casualties include 165 Hog Deer, 2 Swamp Deer, and 2 Sambar, most of which drowned. Additionally, park rescue teams have actively saved 143 animals, including 2 rhino calves and 2 elephant calves. The situation in Kaziranga remains challenging, with 26 forest camps still submerged.
As Assam battles these severe floods, the offers of support from both state and central authorities underscore the collaborative efforts needed to navigate this disaster.
