CRPF Jawan Killed, Three Injured in Militant Ambush in Manipur’s Jiribam District
Guwahati: A CRPF jawan died and at least three police and security personnel were injured following an ambush by suspected militants in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Sunday morning. The attack targeted a joint patrol party of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Manipur Police in Mongbung village, a region near the Assam border, known for its heightened security measures. The deceased, identified as Ajay Kumar Jha, was a 43-year-old resident of Bihar.
Condemning the attack, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh attributed the violence to suspected Kuki militants. "I strongly condemn the killing of a CRPF personnel in an attack carried out by Kuki militants in Jiribam district. His supreme sacrifice in the line of duty shall not go in vain," Singh wrote on X, expressing condolences to Jha’s family and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.
Contrasting Singh’s statement, the Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex body representing Kuki tribes, described the ambush as a "state-sponsored attack." They accused a combined force of Meitei State Forces and Valley Based Insurgent Groups, including the Arambai Tenggol, of executing the assault. The organization called on the Union government to safeguard the Kuki-Zo community, advocating for a distinct administrative region to ensure their security, representation, and autonomy.
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) of Manipur echoed similar sentiments. In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the ITLF criticized the alleged heavy-handedness of central agencies amid the ongoing ethnic conflict, asserting that the current administrative framework fails to protect Kuki-Zo people’s rights and lives. They urged the establishment of a separate Union Territory under Article 239A of the Constitution for the Kuki-Zo community as a means to achieve lasting peace and stability.
The incident underlines the deep-seated ethnic tensions and the call for administrative restructuring in the region to ensure the security and equitable representation of all communities.
