Agartala, 14th July 2024: Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha emphasized the importance of educating the younger generation about the historical significance of the Kharchi Puja and its fourteen deities. Dr. Saha made these remarks while inaugurating the 7-day traditional Kharchi Puja festival at the Chaturdash Devta temple in Khayerpur, old Agartala, on Sunday.

Stressing the festival’s ancient roots, Dr. Saha highlighted that the tradition would remain incomprehensible to future generations unless they are informed about its background. He noted that India’s rich culture, including the Kharchi Puja, forms an integral part of the nation’s heritage that should be preserved and passed down.

To encourage greater participation, Dr. Saha declared a public holiday on the festival’s concluding day, July 20. "After consulting with officials, I declared July 20 as a holiday so that people can join the celebrations more joyously," he said. He reminisced about his childhood experiences attending the festival, often marked by the daunting task of crossing a rapid river by boat to reach the temple.

Dr. Saha further elaborated that three out of the fourteen deities are worshipped regularly at the temple, while the remaining deities join the rituals during the seven-day Kharchi Puja. He underscored the need to inform the next generation about these historical practices to preserve the tradition.

Emphasizing the role of such cultural events in fostering unity and brotherhood among the people, Dr. Saha expressed his joy at participating in the festival again. He reflected on the state’s development, noting the significant progress that has made access to these cultural sites much easier.

The event saw the presence of several prominent figures, including area MLA Ratan Chakraborty, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, former Minister Rampada Jamatia, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar, and MLA Sapna Debbarma.
