The Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jay Shah, announced a financial aid package of Rs 1 crore for former India cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad, who is battling blood cancer. Shah personally contacted Gaekwad’s family to extend support. In a press release, the BCCI pledged full assistance and expressed confidence in Gaekwad’s recovery.

The situation was brought to light by former cricketer Sandeep Patil, who revealed that Gaekwad has been undergoing treatment in London and called for financial help. Former India captain Kapil Dev also advocated for Gaekwad, urging the BCCI for financial support and attempting to raise funds with the help of other ex-cricketers. Kapil Dev additionally criticized the BCCI for lacking a proper system to support former cricketers.

Anshuman Gaekwad, who made his international debut against the West Indies in December 1974, has had a notable cricket career. He played 40 Tests, scoring 1985 runs at an average of 30.07, including two centuries and ten fifties. In addition, he featured in 15 ODIs, amassing 269 runs with an average of 20.69 and one half-century. Post-retirement, Gaekwad served as the head coach of the Indian national team.
