Hathras Case: SC to Hear Plea for Probe Today
New Delhi, July 11: The Supreme Court will hear a petition today seeking an investigation into the Hathras stampede incident that resulted in 121 deaths on July 2. The plea requests the formation of a five-member expert committee, supervised by a retired Supreme Court judge, to probe the event. The hearing is scheduled before a bench including Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. The stampede occurred during a religious gathering in Phulrai village, drawing over 2.5 lakh devotees, while the permitted limit was only 80,000. The Uttar Pradesh Police has filed charges against the organizers for evidence concealment and violating conditions.
Maharashtra Proposes Bill to Curb Naxal Threat
Mumbai, July 11: The Maharashtra government presented the ‘Maharashtra Special Public Security Act 2024’ bill in the assembly, aimed at preventing unlawful activities by individuals and organizations. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the necessity to combat the increasing presence of Naxal groups in both rural and urban areas through robust legal measures. This legislation seeks to prevent activities such as violence, vandalism, and actions instilling public fear. The bill aligns with similar Public Security Acts in states like Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.
Mumbai BMW Hit-and-Run: Accused Found Drunk
Mumbai, July 11: Mihir Shah, the primary accused in the BMW hit-and-run case and the son of a Shiv Sena politician, was reportedly inebriated during the crash that killed a woman early Sunday. Mumbai police have reconstructed the accident and interrogated Shah (24) alongside his family driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, who was present during the incident. The woman, Kaveri Nakhwa, was fatally struck while her husband Pradip was injured when their two-wheeler was rear-ended by Shah’s BMW on Worli’s Anni Besant Road. Shockingly, Kaveri remained on the bonnet and got entangled in the wheels for over 1.5 kilometers. Shah remains in police custody until July 16 for further questioning.
