Thick Smoke Engulfs Erode After Major Fire at Sathy Road Godown
Erode: A significant fire broke out on Thursday morning at a godown on Sathy Road, near the Erode bus stand, which stored pipes, tubes, and electrical appliances. The blaze ignited around 10:30 a.m. at the rear side of the establishment, causing thick black smoke to billow from the burning plastic pipes. The plumes of smoke were visible from as far as 10 kilometers away, and the entire area was swiftly enveloped.
Upon noticing the fire, the staff immediately alerted the police and the Fire and Rescue Services Department. The blaze attracted a large crowd of onlookers, and traffic on the busy stretch was halted until the afternoon.
Firefighting units from Bhavani, Perundurai, Modakkurichi, and Anthiyur were dispatched to combat the flames, which were fueled by the extensive plastic inventory, including bathroom fittings, industrial pipes, plastic water tanks, and hoses. The firefighters faced significant challenges controlling the fire due to the abundance of highly flammable materials.
While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, authorities suspect a short circuit might be responsible. To prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings that also handle plastics and household appliances, precautionary measures were taken.
By evening, the dedicated efforts of the firefighting teams successfully brought the blaze under control. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the incident underscores the importance of stringent safety measures in storage facilities to prevent such occurrences in the future.
