Karnataka High Court Clampdown: Social Media Banned from Live-Streaming Court Proceedings
Karnataka High Court Restrains Social Media Platforms from Sharing Live-Streamed Proceedings
The High Court of Karnataka has issued a temporary order restraining YouTube, META, and X (formerly Twitter) from sharing live-streamed court proceedings. This restriction is effective immediately and will remain until further notice. Additionally, five private YouTube channels—Kahale News, Fans Troll, Prathidhvani, Avaniyana, and Ravindra Joshi Creations—are prohibited from uploading live-streamed videos from the High Court’s official YouTube channel.
The court has directed these platforms and channels to delete all live-streamed videos uploaded in violation of Rule 10 of the Karnataka Rules on Live-Streaming and Recording of Court Proceedings, 2021. Justice Hemant Chandangoudar issued the interim order following a petition from the Advocates’ Association, Bengaluru (AAB).
The court has also issued notices to the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the State government, the Registrar-General of the High Court, the social media platforms, and the private YouTube channels. The AAB’s petition claimed that the platforms and channels were editing and misusing videos of court proceedings for commercial and entertainment purposes. This misuse allegedly misleads the public with partial information and falsely projects content for personal and political gains, harming the reputation of advocates and eroding public trust in the judiciary.
The rule, effective since September 2021, mandates that recording, sharing, and disseminating live-streamed proceedings or archival data without prior court authorization is punishable under various laws.
