Assam Celebrates Remarkable Triumph as Northeast Leader in Sustainable Development, Declares NITI Aayog Report
Assam Shines in Latest SDG India Index, Shows Steady Progress in Sustainable Development
Assam has emerged as a top performer in the latest SDG India Index 2023-24, released by NITI Aayog. The northeastern state improved its overall score by 8 points since the 2020-21 edition, highlighting significant strides in sustainable development. Since the index’s inception in 2018, Assam has increased its score by 16 points, placing it in the "Front Runner" category, which ranges from 65 to 99 on the SDG scale. This achievement underscores the state’s dedication to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Manipur matched Assam’s improvement, also advancing by 8 points to join the "Front Runner" category. Other northeastern states showed varied progress: Tripura advanced by 6 points, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim each by 5, Mizoram by 4, Meghalaya by 3, and Nagaland by 2. While most secured the "Front Runner" status, Meghalaya, and Nagaland remain in the "Performer" category. Notably, Meghalaya did achieve "Front Runner" status in the specific goal of Good Health and Well-Being, emphasizing its progress in this sector.
The NITI Aayog report categorizes states into four performance levels: achiever, front runner, performer, and aspirant. This classification system aids in tracking progress and fostering competition among states to achieve sustainable development targets.
On a national scale, the SDG India Index 2023-24 indicates positive trends across all states and union territories, with the country’s overall SDG score reaching 71—an improvement from 66 in 2020-21 and 57 in 2018. Significant advancements were noted in areas such as poverty elimination, decent work and economic growth, climate action, and life on land.
The index, evaluating progress on 113 indicators across 16 SDGs, remains a vital tool for promoting competitive and cooperative federalism among states. The steady improvements reflected in the index serve as a testament to India’s growing commitment to sustainable development.
