Outcry for Justice: 5 Tribes Committee Demands End to Reservation Policy for Backward Tribes | MorungExpress
DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 20 (MExN): The 5 Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy has urgently appealed to Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to address pressing issues related to the state’s Job Reservation Policy for Backward Tribes. This Committee, formed by apex bodies of the Angami Public Organization, Ao Senden, Lotha Hoho, Rengma Hoho, and Sumi Hoho, articulated their concerns in a recent memorandum.
The reservation policy, in force for 47 years, has substantially benefited tribes classified as backward, sometimes even surpassing advanced tribes, the Committee claimed. Originally designed to undergo reviews every decade, the policy was prolonged indefinitely by a 1989 government directive, stagnating ever since, according to the memorandum. Despite multiple committees formed by the state government to review this policy, their recommendations have largely been ignored or partially implemented.
Key issues like the duration of reservations, internal reservation policies, discrimination due to multiple benefits, entry age discrepancies, and backlog of reserved posts remain unaddressed. The Committee emphasized that this indefinite reservation, left unchecked, risks creating economic disparities and social unrest among Scheduled Tribes in Nagaland.
The Committee criticized the government’s failure to cater to the interests of non-backward tribes and demanded an urgent overhaul of the reservation policy. They proposed either abolishing the current policy or reserving the remaining unreserved quota exclusively for the five tribes, which represent nearly 55% of the state’s Scheduled Tribe population. This move, the Committee argued, would ensure fair opportunities for all tribes and uphold meritocracy and equality principles.
By addressing these core issues, the Committee aims to mitigate potential economic imbalances and prevent rising social inequalities, ensuring a more balanced and equitable system for all tribes in Nagaland.
