Exciting Breakthrough: 17 Pioneers Awarded Coveted Licenses for Revolutionary Scientific Coal Mining!
Meghalaya Advances in Scientific Coal Mining: 27 Applications Sent to Ministry
Guwahati: The Meghalaya government has taken a significant leap towards advancing scientific coal mining. In a recent development, the government submitted 27 applications to the Ministry of Coal. Out of these, 17 applicants secured a Prospecting License (PL), and eight applications obtained geological report approval.
Further progress includes four applicants receiving provisional mining lease approvals, pending the vetting and approval of their mining plans.
According to the 24th interim report by Justice (Retd) B P Katakey, the state’s coal inventory is reported to be 483,825.57 tons, spread across four districts. To enhance transparency and curb illegal mining activities, the committee has recommended the use of aerial surveys and satellite imaging via the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC).
In addition, the state government has been advised to implement a "colored sticker system" for trucks transporting auctioned seized coal, CIL auctioned coal, and coal imported from outside the state. This measure aims to prevent illegal coal transportation and export, particularly to Bangladesh.
These steps underscore Meghalaya’s commitment to establishing a scientific and lawful framework for coal mining, ensuring environmental compliance and economic benefit.
