Nagaland United: Celebrating World Bamboo Day for a Thriving and Green Future
Nagaland Celebrates World Bamboo Day with Focus on Innovation and Sustainability
Dimapur: The Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) commemorated World Bamboo Day on Wednesday at the Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre in Chumoukedima, spotlighting the theme, "Next Generation Bamboo: Solution, Innovation, and Design." The event aspired to encourage the utilization of bamboo for a sustainable future.
NBDA chairman Nuzota Swuro hoisted the ceremonial flag and highlighted the agency’s endeavors since its 2004 inception. Swuro emphasized that the NBDA is pioneering innovative, creative, and sustainable entrepreneurial projects. An action plan has already been rolled out, designating Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, and Peren districts as bamboo economic zones.
Swuro mentioned that 46 locally grown bamboo species have been identified, with plans for lab tests and analysis. He said, “This scientific data will enable artisans to extract raw materials efficiently.”
NBDA team member Tolto Metha spoke about bamboo’s vital role in various societal aspects in Nagaland. Under the National Bamboo Mission guidelines, the NBDA has been harnessing bamboo’s potential, engaging entrepreneurs in initiatives such as bamboo handicrafts, furniture, shoots, charcoal, mats, incense sticks, and blinds.
The agency has fostered collaboration with local artisans, farmers, self-help groups, offering assistance, training, and skill development. Metha also noted their marketing strategy, which involves working with private marketing houses and promoting bamboo’s ecological benefits through various campaigns with NGOs, students, and green innovators.
The event also saw the presentation of the ‘Bamboo Entrepreneur Award 2024’ to Aosanen from Dimapur for his exceptional bamboo craftsmanship and product innovation.
