In a decisive series victory, India clinched a 4-1 win against Zimbabwe by triumphing in the final T20I of the five-match series by 42 runs on Sunday, July 14. Despite a rocky start, losing the series opener, India rallied under the leadership of Shubman Gill to win the remaining four matches.
India, batting first after losing the toss, encountered early challenges as Zimbabwe’s bowlers quickly dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Abhishek Sharma during the powerplay. Sanju Samson then anchored the innings, forming a vital 65-run partnership with Riyan Parag for the fourth wicket. Parag fell for 22 in the 15th over with the team’s score just over 100. Samson’s impressive 58 ended three overs later, but late contributions from Shivam Dube (26 off 12) and Rinku Singh pushed India to a competitive 167/6 in 20 overs.
Zimbabwe’s chase of 168 got off to a poor start, losing two wickets in the first three overs to Mukesh Kumar. A resilient 44-run stand between Tadiwanashe Marumani (27) and Dion Myers (34) gave some hope, but Washington Sundar broke the partnership in the ninth over. The loss of Myers and a quick run-out of captain Sikandar Raza by Player of the Match Shivam Dube left Zimbabwe struggling at 87/5 in 13.4 overs. Two more quick wickets for just seven runs cemented India’s dominance. Despite a late fightback from Faraz Akram (27 off 13), Zimbabwe was bowled out for 125 in 18.3 overs. Mukesh Kumar was India’s bowling star, taking 4/22, while Dube contributed with two wickets.
Washington Sundar, delivering a commendable all-round performance, was named Player of the Series for his eight wickets and crucial runs throughout the matches.
