Historic SpaceX Capsule Triumphantly Returns to Earth After Pioneering Commercial Spacewalk | Must-Read Technology News
In a historic milestone for private space exploration, SpaceX successfully completed a mission that saw a capsule carrying four private citizens splash down off the Florida coast. This mission, notable for featuring the first all-civilian spacewalk, remained in orbit for five days. The event was live-streamed by SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk.
Billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, who funded the mission, joined retired Air Force Lt. Col. Scott “Kidd” Poteet, and SpaceX engineers Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon on the journey. Isaacman, serving as Mission Commander, and Gillis made history as the 264th and 265th individuals to perform a spacewalk, milestones previously reserved for professional astronauts. The spacewalk took place at an altitude of approximately 738 kilometers.
Isaacman shared the awe-inspiring view of Earth, remarking, “From here, Earth sure looks like a perfect world.” The mission, named Polaris Dawn, was part of a broader program aimed at advancing human spaceflight capabilities.
In celebration of the mission’s success, Polaris posted on social media, “SpaceX and the Polaris Dawn crew have completed the first commercial spacewalk!” SpaceX echoed the triumph, noting the safe splashdown and completion of Polaris Program’s inaugural human spaceflight.
This landmark mission signifies a significant step forward in commercial space exploration, symbolizing a new era where civilians are not just passengers but active participants in space exploration.
