Relive the Glory: Osaka’s Triumphant Return as Host for the 2025 World Expo after 50 Memorable Years
OSAKA, Japan (AP) — While Tokyo and Kyoto often steal the limelight, Osaka is bustling with preparations to host the World Expo in 2025. This major event, slated for April 13 to October 13, is anticipated to attract 28.2 million visitors, including over 3 million from abroad, and has already sold nearly 5 million tickets. The city, typically known as a business hub, is adorned with the Expo’s red-and-blue “Myaku-Myaku” mascot, stirring excitement mixed with nostalgia, particularly among older residents who recall the 1970 World Expo fondly.
The 1970 Expo was a landmark event showcasing moon rocks, electric car prototypes, and the first ethernet cables, and introduced many Japanese to Western foods and international music. Former participants like Takahiro Shinyo, now a professor and former ambassador, emphasize the enduring value of direct, face-to-face international interactions fostered by such events.
Despite enthusiasm within Osaka, there are concerns about escalating construction costs and political infighting, and some question the relevance of World Expos, especially after Tokyo’s troubled 2021 Olympics during the pandemic. However, organizers, including spokeswoman Sachiko Yoshimura, stress the importance of international cooperation over technological showcases.
The 2025 Expo promises innovative attractions like flying car prototypes and will be held on a man-made island, echoing the construction of Kansai International Airport. For those eager to reminisce about Expo ’70, ExpoCity offers an immersive experience with pavilions, memorabilia, and the iconic “Tower of the Sun” sculpture.
Tickets for the 2025 World Expo range from 4,000 yen ($25) to 6,700 yen ($42) and are available online.
