Nepal’s disaster agency on Friday raised the number of people missing on its side of the border to 1,924, and Chinese state media reported 554 people missing in Tibet, bringing the combined missing total to at least 2,478 after a jump of more than 1,000 from the previous day. Chinese officials also confirmed seven deaths in Tibet, while Nepal’s agency reported at least 579 deaths on its side — a combined confirmed death toll of at least 586.
Nepal’s disaster agency said 517 foreigners remained unaccounted for on the Nepali side. Chinese authorities put the number of foreigners missing in their area at 260, meaning at least 777 foreigners were missing across the region. The Nepal Tourism Board said 121 tourists had been rescued, but the overall number of people rescued, including local residents and foreign workers, was unclear.
Numbers by nationality varied across sources and showed significant discrepancies between agencies. The Nepal Tourism Board listed 622 people as missing on Friday, including 149 Nepali tourists; Nepal’s disaster agency gave a lower figure of 127 Nepali tourists missing. The board reported 98 people from India missing with 85 rescued. For the United States, the State Department earlier said 90 citizens were missing and three had been rescued; the Nepal Tourism Board later put the U.S. figure at 65 missing and two rescued. Ukraine’s embassy in Nepal said it had lost contact with 62 citizens, while the Tourism Board listed 61 Ukrainians missing.
Other national tallies reported by Nepal’s tourism authorities and foreign ministries included: 51 Malaysians; 41 Australians unaccounted for, according to Australia’s assistant immigration minister; 33 from the United Kingdom; 29 Latvians; 25 Canadians (Canada’s foreign ministry gave a figure of 30 missing across Nepal and Tibet); nine South Koreans and nine Singaporeans; eight Germans; nine Russians (two of whom had been rescued); and smaller numbers from countries including South Africa, Japan, New Zealand, France, Spain, Belgium, Hungary, Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, Kazakhstan and others. Chinese authorities said 260 foreigners were among the missing on their side but did not provide a nationality breakdown. The nationalities of non-tourists and many local residents still unaccounted for have not been released.
Rescue and recovery operations continued amid difficult conditions, and officials warned that numbers could change as search teams reach more affected areas. The figures reported here were compiled from statements by Nepal’s disaster agency, the Nepal Tourism Board and foreign ministries, and from China’s state news agency Xinhua, as reported by AFP.
