Alarming KSU Rally in Shillong: Vehicles Torched, Vandalised
A black-flag bike rally organised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Shillong on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, turned violent, with reports of assaults on civilians, stone‑pelting and widespread damage to vehicles across the city. The protest, intended to press the Meghalaya government to act on the KSU’s five‑point charter of demands, escalated into incidents of vandalism in multiple localities.
Vandalism and clashes were reported from Polo, Barik and Mawlai. According to reports, a police escort vehicle (registration ML 05 AC 7081) had its side window smashed and the rear glass of a National Informatics Centre vehicle was broken at Barik. A pickup truck (ML 05 AD 0925) and a Telecom Department truck (AS 01P 2707) were also damaged during the unrest.
At FCI Mawlai, a government vehicle was reportedly set on fire. The protective glass panel of a statue of Swami Vivekananda at RR Colony — installed by the RRCWS in 2025 — was also damaged, witnesses said.
The disturbances followed a brief demonstration by KSU members outside the Main Secretariat earlier in the day. Protesters erected banners accusing the government of nepotism and corruption in recruitment; police removed the banners and tightened security around the Secretariat shortly afterwards, the reports said.
The bike rally formed part of the KSU’s wider campaign over a five‑point charter it has pressed on the state government. The union had given the government a 15‑day deadline and held public meetings across Shillong on August 17 and 18 as part of its mobilisation.
One of the main grievances cited by the KSU relates to a public hearing for Shree Cement in East Jaintia Hills on July 31, 2026, which the union has alleged was pre‑arranged and has sought action over. The KSU’s other demands include full implementation of the MRSSA 2016 with entry‑point facilitation centres, enforcement of the amended Migrant Workmen Act 2020, recruitment reforms at NEIGRIHMS, and removal of interviews for Grade B, C and D posts.
The report did not provide details of arrests or an official response from the Meghalaya government or police.
