Shocking Violence in Manipur’s Kangpokpi: Eight-Year-Old Injured
Imphal, July 6 — Fresh violence erupted at Thingkhongjang village in K. Geljang Sub‑Division, Kangpokpi district, on Sunday evening, leaving two people — including an eight‑year‑old girl — injured in alleged firing and prompting reports that several houses were set ablaze. Security forces were deployed to the village following the incident, which triggered panic among residents.
The injured were identified as 56‑year‑old Nengneichong Kipgen and eight‑year‑old Lamneingah Kipgen, both villagers. According to the report, both sustained bullet wounds to their left thighs and were first taken to the 9 Sector Hospital by the Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations), Kangpokpi, for emergency care.
Local accounts say the attack occurred at about 5:10 pm when suspected armed miscreants opened fire on the settlement. Witnesses reported that gunfire and subsequent fires damaged several homes, prompting villagers to flee and security personnel to move in to secure the area.
Around 9 pm the two injured were referred to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, for specialised treatment. Hospital sources said they were admitted on arrival and taken to the minor operation theatre for further evaluation; their condition was described as stable.
Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) strongly condemned the incident, calling it a “barbaric and cowardly attack” on peaceful villagers. In a statement, the organisation alleged the assault was carried out by armed cadres of NSCN (IM) and an alleged proxy faction, ZUF‑Kamson, and claimed civilian houses were deliberately torched and that women and children were targeted.
KIM also questioned local security arrangements, saying the attack took place despite the nearby presence of the 86 Battalion’s F Company and calling the episode a major security lapse. The group referred to earlier assurances by the Kangpokpi Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police that district police would protect villages, making volunteer patrols unnecessary.
Demanding accountability, KIM called for “an independent, transparent and time‑bound judicial inquiry” and said, “The Kuki Inpi Manipur unequivocally demands immediate accountability from all officers whose negligence or failure of command contributed to this incident, pending the completion of an independent judicial inquiry.”
There was no immediate response from the Manipur Police, security forces, or the organisations named in KIM’s allegations. The claims made by KIM could not be independently verified at the time of reporting.
