India-Japan Ties Brew Success: Assam’s Matcha Auction Debut
Guwahati: As Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi concluded her three-day visit to India, a decade-long India–Japan collaboration in Assam’s tea gardens reached a landmark: India’s first commercially produced Matcha tea was sold through the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC). The historic transaction took place during Sale No. 27 at GTAC, marking the auction debut of Assam-grown Matcha.
The sale represents a notable shift for Assam, traditionally known for its black teas, as producers move into value-added and specialty tea segments. Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder closely associated with Japanese tea culture; its commercial production in Assam reflects years of cooperative work between Indian growers and Japanese partners to adapt cultivation and processing techniques.
Details released with the report note that the Matcha lot was offered at GTAC’s Sale No. 27, drawing attention from buyers and traders following the high-profile diplomatic visit. Industry observers see the development as both an economic opportunity for Assam’s smallholders and a symbolic outcome of stronger India–Japan ties in agriculture and trade after a decade of collaboration.
The sale was first reported by EastMojo, which highlighted the timing alongside Prime Minister Takaichi’s visit and framed the auction debut as a milestone for Assam’s tea sector and broader bilateral cooperation.
