Discover India’s Celestial Wonders: An Enchanting Stargazing Guide by The Hindu
Nikhil Balasubramaniam vividly recalls the moment he first glimpsed a sky brimming with stars, bringing him to tears during a solo trip to the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu. Despite being familiar with the night sky, Nikhil had spent his life in Chennai, under a veil of light pollution. His stargazing awakening came in 2023, transforming his perception of the universe and sparking an existential realization of his insignificance.
Astro-tourism in India has seen significant growth, partly fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic, which cleared skies and piqued public interest in astronomy. Kailas Belekar of Aeronautics & Space Exploration notes that Ladakh, with its pristine skies, became a premier destination for stargazers, boasting a Bortle Scale rating of 1. However, the logistical challenges of Ladakh have pushed tour operators towards more accessible locations like Pench, Ranthambore, Kodaikanal, and destinations across the Northeast.
The rise in stargazing tourism is underscored by initiatives such as the Dark Sky Park at Maharashtra’s Pench Tiger Reserve, set up by the Dhruva Sky Watchers Association. This observatory attracts up to 120 visitors daily, blending stargazing with local safaris and leveraging sustainable development practices.
Tour organizers like Bhavanandhi Babulal of Starvoirs encourage participants to explore the cosmos independently, beginning with the naked eye and progressing to telescopes. These guided tours often include daytime activities such as hiking and cultural experiences, ensuring an enriching and comprehensive adventure.
Safety and accessibility remain priorities, with extensive logistical planning to ensure the comfort and security of all participants, particularly women. The burgeoning popularity of such tours, often leading to enduring friendships and even romance under the night sky, highlights the deep human connection to the stars.
