Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi’s 3-Day India Visit: Strategic Boost
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday evening for a three-day official visit to participate in the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, calling the visit “an important step in taking forward the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between India and Japan.” Takaichi was received on arrival by MoS Dr Jitendra Singh, the MEA added.
Earlier on Wednesday, Japan’s Ambassador to India Ono Keiichi said at the Japan session of the Human Resource Mobility Forum that the visit is “a great opportunity” to advance people-to-people exchanges, which he described as the cornerstone of the bilateral relationship. The MEA said the forum highlighted emerging pathways for India-Japan collaboration in skill-based mobility.
Speaking to reporters in Tokyo before departing, Takaichi said she aims to push for “concrete cooperation” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi across three areas: deepening the strategic partnership in light of the current international situation, promoting cooperation in economic security, and strengthening business collaboration in investment and innovation. She framed the visit as an effort to widen practical ties between the two governments and their private sectors.
On the economic front, Takaichi said the Japan-India Joint Economic Forum will convene with representatives from more than 150 Japanese companies and business organisations. “Working together with the private sector, I hope to broaden the scope of Japan-India cooperation and realise a strong economy,” she told reporters.
Takaichi also stressed that India and Japan share responsibility for maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific and said she looks forward to discussions with Modi on realising a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP), including cooperation through the Quad framework. She added that the visit, made at Modi’s invitation, should help deepen personal trust between the two leaders.
Takaichi is scheduled to receive a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday and will attend the India-Japan Annual Summit and a business forum during her stay. This is her first official visit to India since assuming office. (IANS)
