ভাৰতৰ প্ৰথম ভাসমান এয়াৰপোৰ্ট: পানীৰ ওপৰত আধুনিক বিমানবন্দৰ
The Maharashtra government is advancing plans for what would be India’s first floating offshore airport off the state’s western coast, directing officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed facility near Kore, close to Vadhvan Port in Palghar district. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed responsible departments to take the project forward, and social media reports dated June 28, 2026, indicate a DPR has been prepared or approved for the proposal.
A floating airport — essentially an aerodrome constructed on a man-made island or floating platform at sea — is proposed as a solution where inland land is scarce or already densely populated. The concept is not new globally: countries such as Japan, China and South Korea already operate offshore or reclaimed-airport facilities and have reported benefits from such infrastructure.
According to the state government, the planned Maharashtra offshore airport would be linked to the mainland via the proposed Uttan–Vira sea link and integrated with regional transport projects, including a Vadhvan seaport, expressway connections and proposed high-speed rail links. Officials say the multimodal connections are intended to weave the new facility into the broader Mumbai metropolitan transport network.
State documents estimate the project could benefit roughly nine crore people each year, reflecting both passenger traffic potential and wider economic spillovers. Proponents argue that an offshore airport would overcome land constraints, relieve pressure on existing airports and support the region’s capacity to handle future growth in air travel and cargo.
Experts quoted in the source say the government aims to use the airport, seaport and expressway investments to modernize Mumbai’s overall connectivity and stimulate economic activity across the metropolitan region. They contend that, if implemented, the project could deliver significant economic gains for the state and the country.
At this stage the plan remains at the DPR and linking-study phase, with the government completing technical and connectivity assessments before any construction begins.
