CM Launches Urgent Drive to Remove City’s Hazardous Hanging Wires
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on June 29, 2026, chaired a high-level meeting in Shillong with the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, MeECL officials, cable operators, DTH providers and internet service providers to launch a coordinated drive to remove non-functional cables, hanging wires and unused infrastructure cluttering the city ahead of the National Games scheduled for March next year (March 2027). The meeting set out a phased, practical plan to clear overhead wiring that officials say has become both a safety hazard and a major visual blight.
Sangma acknowledged that the tangle of overhead cables has long marred Shillong’s appearance, calling it an “eyesore” that spoils the scenic charm, colonial architecture and natural landscapes of the city often called the “Scotland of the East.” Officials at the meeting discussed roles and responsibilities for MeECL, service providers and local authorities to identify and remove obsolete lines and equipment.
“With the National Games approaching, we are committed to improving the city’s appearance through a phased, practical approach,” Sangma said, urging all stakeholders to cooperate with the government to restore Shillong’s visual elegance. The chief minister stressed coordination between utilities and private operators to ensure removals are safe and do not disrupt active services.
The initiative marks a start toward tackling long-standing visual pollution that residents and visitors have criticised for years. Authorities say the programme aims to improve public safety, preserve the city’s heritage aesthetics and present a cleaner, uncluttered urban environment for the upcoming national event.
