Assam Flood Alert: Kaliabor Issues Prohibitory Order Near Kaziranga
The Kaliabor Co‑District Administration has imposed prohibitory measures along the Kaziranga National Park corridor on National Highway 715 with immediate effect to safeguard wildlife amid continuous rains and rising water levels. The order, effective for the monsoon period from June 1 to September 30, was issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and signed by Additional District Magistrate‑cum‑Co‑District Commissioner Raj Boruah.
The move follows a warning from the Divisional Forest Officer of the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, Bokakhat, that flooding could submerge large stretches of NH‑715 (Old NH‑37), forcing animals to move to higher ground in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council area. The administration said heavy traffic on the highway could pose a serious threat to animals during such migration.
To reduce human interference and facilitate safe animal movement, the order sets a maximum speed limit of 40 kmph for vehicles passing through the Kaziranga corridor and bans gatherings of five or more people in designated animal corridors. Stopping or parking of light and heavy vehicles along the Kaziranga stretch within the Kaliabor Co‑District is prohibited except in cases of mechanical failure.
The order also forbids the use of bright lights at night, playing loud music through vehicle sound systems, and unnecessary honking while traversing the wildlife corridors, citing the potential to disturb animals crossing the highway. The prohibitory order was issued ex parte under Section 163(2) of the BNSS.
Exemptions have been allowed for police, paramilitary and armed forces personnel, forest officials, security agencies, ambulances carrying critically ill patients, and doctors and paramedical staff on emergency duties. The measures apply to the entire stretch between Rangalu and Bagori, covering the identified animal corridors along NH‑715 through Kaziranga.
The administration warned that violators will face legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with other applicable laws, underscoring efforts to prevent wildlife‑vehicle conflict and protect both animals and motorists during the monsoon.
