NIA Charges 11 in Assam Terror Conspiracy: Shocking Arrests
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday, June 26, 2026, filed a chargesheet in the NIA Special Court in Guwahati against 11 accused in an alleged terror conspiracy linked to an offshoot of the banned Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), authorities said. The chargesheet, filed under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, alleges a plot to expand the outlawed group’s influence in West Bengal and the northeastern states, including Assam and Tripura.
According to an NIA press release, the probe found the accused were allegedly associated with Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK), which the agency describes as an IMK offshoot formed to propagate JMB’s extremist ideology within India. The NIA further alleged that senior JMB member Imam Mahmud Habibullah had established IMK to advance the banned organisation’s activities on Indian soil.
The agency says the conspiracy involved promoting extremist propaganda, radicalising vulnerable youth and extending the terror network across West Bengal and the Northeast. Investigators allege these aims were pursued through clandestine meetings, religious indoctrination programmes, circulation of extremist literature and the use of digital platforms for anti-India messaging.
The chargesheet names Nasimuddin as the alleged IMK leader in Assam and Jagir Mia as the alleged head of IMK operations in Tripura. During the investigation, the NIA reports recovery of incriminating documents, electronic devices and digital records that form part of the evidence against the accused.
The case, registered as RC-01/2026/NIA/GUW, remains under investigation as the agency continues to examine links, material evidence and the wider network alleged to be operating across the region.
