Assam-Nagaland Border Tension: Mariani Road Construction Halted
Fresh tension erupted along the Assam–Nagaland border in Jorhat district after road construction under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in Mariani was reportedly halted again by unidentified Naga groups. Labourers had resumed work on the rural road project under Katani Gaon Panchayat on 24 July following local protests demanding that development on the Assam side continue without interference, but construction was later stopped when people from across the border arrived at the site, obstructed the work and allegedly issued threats, triggering panic among residents in the border area.
The incident has reignited concerns over the long‑running Assam–Nagaland boundary dispute. Student bodies that have led recent demonstrations — the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association and the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam — said repeated protests and memoranda have not prompted adequate action by the district administration or the state government to prevent such disruptions.
Local organisations maintain the road lies within Assam’s territory, while opposing groups have disputed that claim. Protesters said ongoing administrative inaction has emboldened repeated interference in development projects, undermining local livelihoods and delaying MGNREGA work that provides rural employment and infrastructure.
The current dispute follows a similar halt to road repair work in the same area on 20 June after objections were raised over land ownership. That episode sparked widespread protests on 23 June, when residents, student bodies and nearly 18 organisations demanded a permanent resolution to the border issue and called for urgent talks involving the governments of Assam and Nagaland, local stakeholders and the Union Government to secure lasting peace in the region.
Community leaders and activists are pressing for clear administrative steps and a negotiated settlement so that essential development work under schemes like MGNREGA can proceed without fear. The blockade of infrastructure projects on contested border land highlights how the unresolved boundary dispute continues to impede development and heighten tensions for communities on both sides.
