Students appearing for the Higher Secondary (HS) final examinations in Assam will soon get a second chance to clear failed subjects without losing an academic year, the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) has announced. The board said supplementary examinations will be introduced from the next academic session and will be held roughly two months after HS result declaration.
ASSEB Chairman Ramesh Chandra Jain said the move is intended to help students who fail in a limited number of subjects continue their studies without waiting for the following year’s exams. He added that the supplementary window will allow those students to complete their academic requirements within the same cycle.
The decision aligns with reforms under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the board said, and follows a pattern already adopted by several state and national boards that offer timely retake opportunities. ASSEB indicated Assam is moving to establish a comprehensive supplementary-exam mechanism at the Higher Secondary level.
Officials also said logistical arrangements similar to those used for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) compartmental system would be extended as needed to ensure a smooth transition. By providing an additional examination window, the state aims to strengthen academic continuity and reduce instances of students being held back solely because of limited assessment opportunities.
