জুনত সমগ্ৰ ভাৰতত বৰষুণ ৪২% হ্ৰাস — বতৰ বিজ্ঞান কেন্দ্ৰৰ গম্ভীৰ উদ্বেগ
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) says June rainfall across the country fell sharply — roughly 42% below normal. While the month typically records about 113 mm of rain, this June the nationwide figure was only 65.2 mm, the IMD reported.
The IMD’s data show several states registering notable shortfalls. Punjab recorded about 27% less rainfall than normal and Uttarakhand about 42% less. Other states with substantially below‑average rainfall include Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. By contrast, the IMD notes that June last year saw above‑normal rains, at 109% of the long‑term average.
The department also cautions that the southwest monsoon — which typically runs from June to September — is likely to bring below‑normal rainfall nationwide this season. The monsoon has already advanced into parts of Maharashtra (including Mumbai), Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and portions of Bihar. IMD forecasts indicate conditions are favorable for the monsoon to extend into Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and additional areas of Uttar Pradesh over the next two to three days. Separate western disturbances may produce some rain over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab.
The shortfall matters because the southwest monsoon supplies roughly 75% of India’s annual rainfall and replenishes rivers, lakes and groundwater. Nearly half of India’s population depends on agriculture, making monsoon rains critical for sowing, irrigation and drinking‑water supplies. The IMD’s warning of a weaker-than-normal monsoon therefore has important implications for cropping, water resources and rural livelihoods.
