IMD Warns of Heavy Rain in Northeast: Assam & Meghalaya on Alert
Agartala, June 22: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across large parts of the Northeast, with Assam and Meghalaya singled out for particularly intense downpours. The IMD said widespread to fairly widespread rain is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura between June 22 and June 28, while isolated thunderstorms with lightning may occur over these states from June 22 to June 26.
The weather office separately warned of heavy rain in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura in the coming days and flagged the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over parts of northern India. Heavy showers lashed areas of Meghalaya and Tripura on Sunday, and further intense rainfall is expected in both states over the next few days, the IMD said.
The downpour has already affected daily life and transport. Agartala recorded 102.5 mm of rain in 24 hours, causing severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions. In Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills, Mawsynram received an extraordinary 530 mm in 24 hours — an amount an IMD official said equals what some arid cities like Jodhpur or Bikaner receive in more than six months. RKM Sohra recorded 470 mm and Mawkyrwat 390 mm in the same 24-hour period. Persistent rain damaged a stretch of the national highway linking Shillong with Dawki on the India–Bangladesh border, disrupting vehicular movement.
Other heavy 24-hour totals reported by the IMD included Shella (100 mm), Williamnagar (90 mm), Mawryngkneng (90 mm), Jowai (80 mm), Barapani (70 mm) and Ratacherra (70 mm). The IMD noted that the Southwest Monsoon advanced into substantial parts of the Northeast on June 7, about two days later than the region’s normal onset date, and later covered the entire eight-state region including Sikkim. By comparison, the monsoon had reached most parts of the Northeast on May 26 last year (2025).
IMD officials said prevailing meteorological conditions favour further strengthening and advancement of the monsoon in the coming days, and they expect rainfall across the Northeastern states during the season to be normal to above normal. While strong El Niño conditions have been forecast for some parts of India this year, officials added that the Northeast’s mountainous terrain, dense forests and varied topography are likely to moderate any large-scale adverse impacts there.
