Meritorious tribal girl students from across Tirap district were felicitated under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme at the DC Conference Hall in Khonsa on June 17. The Department of Women and Child Development, Tirap, organised the programme to recognise outstanding performances by local tribal girls in the Class X and Class XII board examinations.

Deputy Commissioner of Tirap, Techu Aran, praised the awardees and stressed the need to give daughters equal opportunities. “Girls today are excelling in every sphere of life. Whether in academics, competitive examinations or leadership roles, they are proving their capabilities and often outperforming boys. Parents who have daughters are truly fortunate. We must give our girls every opportunity to learn, grow and achieve their dreams,” he said, congratulating students for their hard work and urging parents to continue investing in girls’ education.

The felicitation covered two categories: Government Schools and Government-Aided/Private Recognized Schools. Under the scheme, first-place holders in both Class X and Class XII received cash awards of ₹15,000 each, while second-place holders were given ₹10,000 each. Awards were presented during the programme and concluded with encouragement from the dignitaries.

Among those present were Hacham Bangsia, Deputy Director of Women and Child Development; K. Hangphuk, DAEO and in-charge DDSE Khonsa; Pakkar Nomuk, CDPO Namsang; Ponung Tasing, DIPRO Khonsa; as well as students, parents and guardians. In her welcome address, Hacham Bangsia outlined the objectives of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, saying it aims to ensure “the survival, protection and education of the girl child” and to create an environment where girls can realise their full potential.

Bangsia described the felicitation as a meaningful initiative to inspire young girls to dream big and pursue their goals with confidence. She congratulated the students and urged them to remain focused on their academic and personal aspirations.

The recognized award recipients included, for Class X in Government Schools, Nyiamjih Agan of GSS Dadam who secured first position and Komnoap Nokbi of GTSS Khonsa who took second. In Class XII Government Schools, Nyari Rongsak of GHSS Borduria earned first position while Comvian Tesia of GHSS Khonsa was second. In the Government-Aided and Private Recognized Schools category for Class X, Chanyok Lowang of RK Sarada Mission School, Khonsa, won first position and Aaronsen C. Tangjang of the same school claimed second.

The ceremony reinforced the message that empowering girls through education is essential for building stronger families and a more progressive society.
