Cachar Farmer Abducted into Bangladesh Returns; Injuries Questioned
Silchar, June 16 — Seventy-seven-year-old Cachar farmer Ranjit Das, who was allegedly taken into Bangladesh while working on farmland near Kinnarkhal village in the Katigorah constituency on Tuesday morning, was returned to India around 10 pm the same day after intervention by the 170 Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF), but he was found injured and the cause of those injuries remains unclear.
Cachar SSP Sanjib Kumar Saikia confirmed the abduction and said the 170 Battalion BSF had taken up the matter with the Border Guard Bangladesh. “The farmer was abducted into Bangladesh. The 170 Battalion BSF subsequently took up the matter with the Border Guard Bangladesh and secured his return,” Saikia said.
Das was taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. He thanked the government for the prompt response but declined to explain how he sustained his injuries, officials said, adding that more details may emerge as he recovers and the investigation progresses.
The incident occurred after a border gate was opened at about 7 am to allow local farmers access to land beyond the fencing. Around 16 to 17 farmers had entered the area for cultivation when the alleged abduction took place.
Ranjit’s younger brother, Kalimohan Das, who said he witnessed the episode, alleged a group approached the farmers while they were ploughing. “During ploughing, the plough developed a problem, causing some delay. A few people suddenly came and caught hold of him. Before we could understand what was happening, they forcibly took him away,” Kalimohan alleged, adding that the men had threatened Ranjit before dragging him away.
Das’s return brought relief to his family and the border village community, which had spent the day in anxiety. With the farmer yet to fully describe his ordeal and the circumstances of his injuries still unexplained, investigators and residents say key questions remain unanswered.
