Tripura West SP: Strict Social Media Ban for Police in Uniform
The Office of the Superintendent of Police, West District, has issued a memorandum forbidding police personnel from creating, participating in, or sharing social media content while wearing the police uniform if that content undermines the dignity, decorum or public image of the force. The order, signed by Superintendent of Police (West) Namit Pathak, responds to observed instances of officers posting reels, short videos, photographs and other material on social platforms while in uniform.
The memorandum stresses that the police uniform is a symbol of authority, discipline, integrity and public trust, and that those who wear it must maintain the highest professional standards. It specifically instructs members of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and other units not to use the uniform for personal publicity, entertainment activities, commercial promotions or any purpose likely to bring disrepute to the department.
Supervisory officers have been directed to monitor compliance, counsel subordinates on appropriate conduct, and ensure the uniform is used only in ways that preserve the force’s dignity. Any objectionable or inappropriate content featuring police personnel in uniform found on social media must be reported immediately through the proper departmental channels for investigation.
The memorandum warns that violations will be treated seriously and may invite strict departmental action under the relevant disciplinary rules. The directive is framed as a measure to protect the professionalism, discipline and public confidence in the Tripura Police amid the rising influence of social media.
