Alarming Spike in Guwahati Traffic Violations: Drink-Driving Crisis
Guwahati recorded a sharp rise in traffic-rule violations in May, city traffic police data show, with drink-driving, helmetless riding and wrong-side driving increasing markedly compared with April. The figures released by the traffic department show steep month-on-month jumps across several major offence categories and a rise in enforcement actions.
The most alarming surge was in drink-driving: cases rose from 41 in April to 396 in May. Police warned that driving under the influence remains a leading cause of serious road accidents and fatalities.
Helmet violations among two-wheeler riders also spiked, climbing from 7,309 in April to 11,859 in May. Of the May violations, 8,230 were detected through the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), underscoring the growing role of automated monitoring in enforcement.
Wrong-side driving incidents increased from 526 in April to 963 in May, a trend police described as a serious threat to both motorists and pedestrians. Other offences also rose: seat-belt violations went from 52 to 90, triple riding on motorcycles from 113 to 130, mobile-phone use while driving from 22 to 31, and vehicles with prohibited black-tinted glass jumped from nine to 92.
Enforcement tightened markedly — only two driving licences were seized or suspended in April, compared with 223 in May. Revenue from e-challans rose from Rs 2.30 crore in April to Rs 3.01 crore in May, and the number of cases forwarded to courts climbed from 123 to 1,107.
Deputy Commissioner of Police said the primary objective of the drive “is not to generate revenue but to create awareness and save lives,” adding that despite ongoing awareness campaigns many motorists continue to flout traffic rules.
The traffic department said it will continue combining ITMS-based monitoring with on-ground enforcement to improve compliance, reduce accidents and encourage safer road behaviour across Guwahati.
