Breaking: Tripura Court Summons TMC MP Abhishek Over 2021 Case
A Khowai district court in Tripura has summoned Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee to appear on June 22 in a case linked to incidents after the 2021 Tripura assembly election, court sources said. The summons stems from a complaint lodged at Khowai Police Station and follows repeated non-compliance with earlier notices, the sources added.
In August 2021, 12 TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee, were arrested for violating the COVID-19 curfew and were booked under provisions of the Epidemic Disease Act and the Disaster Management Act. According to the report, Abhishek had repeatedly ignored the court’s notices over the past year, prompting the court to seek an alternative method of service.
After traditional delivery attempts failed, the court ordered the summons to be served through legal channels by a court-appointed bailiff. A bailiff from Alipore Court in West Bengal was tasked with executing the order. Police were notified and appropriate protocols were followed for service.
Accompanied by officers from Kolkata’s Kalighat Police Station, the bailiff delivered the summons to a Kolkata address associated with Abhishek Banerjee, which is also identified as the residence of former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Reports say efforts were made to hand the notice to Abhishek personally; where that was not possible officials were instructed to affix the notice and officially record the process. A staff member at the residence ultimately received the summons.
The delivery of the summons represents a procedural step in addressing legal actions related to post-election unrest in Tripura. The Khowai court has directed Abhishek Banerjee to comply with its order and appear before it on the scheduled date.
