When the immune system turns against the body’s own cells instead of external germs, the result can be devastating. Doctors at AIIMS in Delhi, in a research paper, describe multiple sclerosis (MS) as a complex autoimmune disorder in which the body progressively loses control over sight, movement and memory. As the disease advances, the nervous system can fail, leaving patients severely disabled and, in extreme cases, risking life-threatening complications.
The AIIMS paper explains that from birth the body normally distinguishes its own tissues from foreign invaders and builds defenses accordingly. In MS, that self‑recognition breaks down: immune cells mistakenly attack the body’s own tissues. This process commonly targets myelin, the protective sheath that surrounds nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord. When myelin is damaged, nerve signals between the brain and the rest of the body are disrupted, undermining the brain’s control over limbs and organs.
Early symptoms are often mild and easy to miss. Dizziness, intermittent blurred vision and extreme fatigue that does not improve after sleep can be dismissed as routine. But these signs may herald deeper injury to the brain and central nervous system. Over time, affected body parts may weaken or become paralysed, walking and daily tasks can become impossible, and many patients develop “brain fog,” a progressive decline in thinking and memory.
MS most commonly affects people between 20 and 50 years of age. AIIMS and the Max Institute of Neurosciences continue to study the disease, while the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India in Mumbai provides clinical care and support. There is currently no known cure. Treatment focuses on controlling the disease and managing symptoms; physicians commonly use steroid‑based therapies to reduce inflammation and recommend physiotherapy to preserve function and mobility.
Because early signs are subtle, the researchers stress the importance of awareness and prompt medical evaluation. Early diagnosis and treatment can slow progression and help maintain quality of life.
