Frustrated College Teachers Boycott Teachers’ Day: Promotion Delays Spark Outrage in Guwahati
Guwahati: In Assam, Over 9,000 College Teachers Boycott Teacher’s Day
In Assam, more than 9,000 college teachers staged protests at their respective institutions, refusing to participate in Teacher’s Day celebrations on Thursday. The teachers voiced their grievances against the state government, primarily focusing on delays and issues related to promotions and revised salaries. Protests were coordinated across various colleges, with teachers wearing black badges, holding meetings, and publicly expressing their dissatisfaction.
The Assam College Teachers’ Association (ACTA), led by President Jayanta Baruah, spearheaded the protests. Baruah highlighted issues such as discrepancies in the promotion dates and amendments to the Office Memorandum issued on November 8, 2023, which they argue contradicts the University Grants Commission (UGC) policies. ACTA demands that assistant professors, whose promotions were due on or before November 7, 2023, but couldn’t undergo screenings for various reasons, be allowed to apply for promotions according to a previous UGC memo from November 13, 2013.
Additionally, part-time teachers in Ahmedabad conducted a peaceful protest demanding a salary hike aligned with UGC standards. Despite years of service, their salaries remain between Rs 8,500 and Rs 25,500 monthly, and appeals to the state education ministry have so far been unfruitful.
Similarly, at Madurai Kamaraj University, Teacher’s Day was marked by staff protests due to two months of unpaid salaries. The university has been facing a financial crisis and has been without a vice-chancellor since May, amid funding disputes with the state government.
As tensions rise in academic institutions across India, the protests reflect growing frustrations over salary discrepancies, promotions, and financial mismanagement, seeking urgent resolutions from the respective state governments.
