New Assam Study Reveals Science Behind Zubeen Garg’s Signature Humming
Guwahati: A new scientific study published in the Journal of Voice has delivered the first systematic acoustic analysis of singer Zubeen Garg’s distinctive wordless humming, finding measurable vocal traits that may explain its strong emotional impact on listeners. Conducted by Kishore Dutta of Handique Girls’ College, Guwahati, and independent researcher Jyotshna Saikia, the paper-titled “Quantitative Acoustic Profiling of Zubeen Garg’s Humming: Temporal Patterning and Spectral Balance”—compares recordings of Garg’s humming with his conventional sung voice and reports statistically significant differences between the two modes.
Using quantitative acoustic profiling, the researchers measured key voice parameters such as jitter (pitch instability), shimmer (amplitude variability), harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR, a measure of tonal clarity versus breathiness), and timbral qualities to distinguish humming from singing. Their analysis shows that Garg’s humming exhibits a more stable vocal pattern, a lower fundamental frequency, and a pronounced harmonic structure compared with his sung voice.
Those acoustic features, the study argues, collectively create a soothing, emotionally resonant sound for listeners. The authors interpret the combination of acoustic steadiness and subtle variation as enhancing expressive depth, concluding that Garg’s humming functions as a distinct vocal expression rather than a simplified extension of singing.
Though fans and popular culture have long noted the emotive power of Garg’s humming, the style had not previously been subjected to rigorous scientific evaluation. By identifying quantifiable traits that define this mode of vocal production, the paper demonstrates how modern voice-science methods can be applied to artistic expression.
Beyond the case of a single performer, the study underscores the growing role of acoustic analysis in exploring vocal identity, musical expression and audience perception, and it situates a culturally significant element of Assam’s music within the scope of international scientific research.
