Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across India have demonstrated significant improvements, as per the latest grading by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Out of around 15,000 graded ITIs, 18.9% scored over 8 on a 0-10 scale, compared to 12.4% last year when a new data-driven grading methodology was introduced.
Two institutes, the Government ITI for Girls in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, and the Government Industrial Training Institute in Barbil, Odisha, achieved the highest scores with grades of 9.6. This positive trend follows the FY25 Budget announcement aimed at skilling two million youths over five years, including upgrading 1,000 ITIs in a hub-and-spoke model focusing on outcomes.
The latest grading covered 14,999 ITIs, a slight increase from 14,951 the previous year; 122 new ITIs did not receive grades due to insufficient data. Notably, Uttar Pradesh leads with 15 among the top 25 ITIs, followed by Odisha, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.
A total of 142 ITIs received grades of 9 and above for the academic year 2024-25. Additionally, nearly 12,700 ITIs received a grade of 4 and above, allowing them to introduce modern courses like 3D printing and IoT. In comparison, 11,900 ITIs received similar ratings last year.
Sumit Kumar, Chief Strategy Officer at TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, highlighted that the grading system enhances competitiveness and excellence in ITIs by upgrading curriculums, infrastructure, and trainers. He emphasized that ITIs are crucial for blue-collar talent, and such systems help meet industry standards.
The new grading method evaluates eight parameters, including admissions and passing results, each accounting for 30%, on the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) portal. Previous grading involved extensive field visits and data validation. The current methodology, however, simplifies processes and is expected to include instructor availability as a parameter in future assessments.
From the next year onwards, ITIs with grades of 9.5 and above will receive a "Star Rating" based on placement data and apprenticeships.
