US Anti-Drug Strike in Pacific Kills One: Shocking Maritime Raid
The U.S. military struck a vessel suspected of drug trafficking in the eastern Pacific on Tuesday, May 27, killing one man and leaving two survivors, U.S. officials said. The attack was one of several recent operations targeting suspected narco-smuggling boats in the region.
Video released by U.S. Southern Command showed the speeding boat bursting into flames after it was struck. The military said it immediately alerted the U.S. Coast Guard, which began search-and-rescue operations for the two survivors.
Since early September, the Trump administration has stepped up operations against alleged drug-smuggling vessels in Latin American waters, including the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific. Officials say those operations have resulted in at least 194 people reportedly killed.
The Pentagon inspector general has opened a review to determine whether the military followed established targeting procedures during the strikes. The review, the Pentagon said, will focus on procedure and will not assess the legality of the actions. (AP)
