Four separate incidents across India on May 22 left at least nine people dead and prompted multiple investigations, officials said. In Chandrapur (Maharashtra) four women were mauled by a tiger while collecting tendu leaves; in Durg (Chhattisgarh) a couple allegedly killed their two minor children and then died by suicide; India successfully test-fired the short‑range ballistic missile Agni‑1 from Odisha’s Chandipur; and in New Delhi a 13‑year‑old girl was allegedly raped and blackmailed with recorded videos, police said.
In Chandrapur, forest officials said the tiger attacked a group of women who had gone into a forested area to gather tendu leaves, commonly used as bidi wrappers. The deceased were identified as Kawadabai Mohurle, 45; Anitabai Mohurle, 40; Sunita Mohurle, 38; and Sangita Chaudhary, 50. Chief Conservator of Forests (Chandrapur Circle) R. M. Ramanujan said a team of forest officers reached the site and that “more details would emerge after the panchnama,” indicating a formal on‑scene record and investigation are under way.
In Durg, police found Govind Sahu, 45, and his wife Chanchal, 40, hanging from the ceiling of their home, while their daughter Drishna, 13, and son Yashant, 11, were discovered dead on a bed. The deaths were discovered late in the morning when a family member noticed the room had not been opened. Authorities recovered a note, purportedly written by Chanchal, that mentioned disputes with her husband. Police said preliminary evidence suggests the children were killed before the couple took their own lives, and investigators are working to establish the full circumstances.
The Defence Ministry said the Agni‑1 missile was successfully test‑fired from the integrated test range at Chandipur, Odisha, validating operational and technical parameters. “The test was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command,” the ministry said. The statement noted that the Agni series, from Agni‑1 to Agni‑4, have ranges between about 700 km and 3,500 km and are already in service.
In New Delhi, police sources said a 13‑year‑old girl was allegedly raped by a 30‑year‑old man who recorded the assault and then blackmailed her with the videos, subjecting her to repeated sexual violence. The accused was arrested after the victim’s family lodged a complaint on May 21 and an FIR was registered under sections for rape and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Investigators said the victim had recently moved into a rented home and had come into contact with the accused through a relative who lived in the same building.
Authorities in each case said inquiries are ongoing and further details will be released as investigations proceed.
